I know I talked about this over on the ‘gram, but Luke and I started dating the day after Valentine’s Day. He had just graduated from Belmont the year before and didn’t even have a full time teaching position yet, so it wasn’t really a fancy date night lavish gifts season for us to say the least. That has always put the holiday in perspective for me. Since then it’s always been more than just a holiday to shill out some money on things we don’t need… it reminds of us where it all started in our journey. Now, if you know me… you know I love me some presents. It’s the only child in me… but this holiday can be so much more… so I’m going to give you some tips!

Simple Ways to Re-invent Your Valentine’s Day:

Do something for your community: This can mean so many things. Maybe you make cards for a local nursing home (that’s a tender spot for me), donate some warm blankets and food to the animal shelter in your area, put some helpful items together for the homeless. Little things go a long way and showing love to those who need it the most will fill your heart up with so much more joy than a new handbag or pair of shoes (which says a lot coming from this girl…).

Make your gifts: I know we all laughed when they said they loved our home-made presents, but our parents were not lying. Make your man (or woman) a nice dinner, make your own card, have a scavenger hunt that takes  you throughout the night and keep a low cap on the spending… those things will make memories you will never forget.

Pay it forward: You never know who is struggling on this day… maybe a wife lost her husband, a mother lost her child, a divorce is wrecking a family… that might be the person in the starbucks line behind you. Pay it forward and make a stranger’s day!

Stay In: So many people go out and spend most of their night waiting. Oh I hate that. Just stay home if you can. It will allow you to avoid stress and enjoy the ones you’re with. Watch the movie you watched on your first date, play your favorite album, light some candles and dance in the living room… have the most blissful night possible without even leaving the house. TBH, you can’t beat pizza on Valentine’s Day… so make your own or order delivery (but tip the person bringing it… because they’re working on Valentine’s Day!)

Create a signature cocktail and have your girlfriends over a few days before or after: We’ve all probably heard of the coined term Galentine’s Day by now… but I think it’s totally wonderful. Your girlfriends have your back no matter what and support you through so much. Celebrate that and your friendship! Yummy cocktails and light snacks are a great combo too!

I hope this gave you some inspiration to make this holiday much more than candy, flowers, and spending money. A little love goes a long way!

Have a great start to your week!
